Behold the greatness of the Shrieks!

That is the song by which they're mostly recognised, but they're so much more. They've been making music since 1981, bringing a dark funk sound to the world that had never before been heard. But I didn't hear of them until 1990 when Aunt Tudi taped the above video from MTV's 120 Minutes. My life literally changed when I saw the music video. The band re-wired my mind and jump-started my writing of what would eventually become The Chalice. It's what finally drove me to England, where I met one of the core members of the band, Barry Andrews. He's the one singing in the video.

Even though they don't identify as being Goth, the Goth community seems to have embraced Shriekback. They're labeled as Goth in record stores and on sites like eBay. I really don't label them as Goth myself, even though Barry labels me as Goth (harrumph!). Their music is difficult to label because it embraces so many different styles, from funk to dub to dance to ethnic. I believe that's their pull for many people. The band itself has four core members: Dave Allen, Barry Andrews, Carl Marsh, and Martyn Barker. Calling themselves a collective, the Shrieks membership would swell and shrink as needed. Making an album was always an experience and an experiment. Their passion and artistry shine through on every album.

A new album is scheduled to come out in the Autumn of this year. I've heard some of the tracks and did a tentative song-by-song for the ones afforded me. When the new album comes out, I'll be writing up an official song-by-song for the band. It's what I've done for years and, in part, what has earned me the title of Shriekback Chronicler. I can deal with that name. In the meantime, here are the lyrics to 'Nemesis,' and if you have any questions about the band, feel free to ask, as I probably know.

In a jungle of the senses
Tinkerbell and Jack the Ripper
Love has no meaning, not where we come from
But we know pleasure is not that simple
Very little fruit is forbidden
Sometimes we wobble, sometimes we're strong
But you know evil is an exact science
Being carefully correctly wrong

Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home
Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis
No one move a muscle as the dead come home

We feel like Greeks, we feel like Romans
Centaurs and monkeys just cluster round us
We drink elixirs that we refine
From the juices of the dying
We are no monsters, we're moral people
And yet we have the strength to do this
This is the splendour of our achievement
Call in the airstrike with a poison kiss

How bad it gets you can't imagine
The burning wakes, the breath of reptiles
God is not mocked, he knows our business
Karma could take us at any moment
Cover him up I think we're finished
You know it's never been so exotic
But I don't know my dreams are vicious
We could still end up with the great big fishes

Johnette Napolitano. Anyone who can sing a capella has my admiration. She does it with class in this video.

She's best known for songs like "Joey" and "Caroline" with the band Concrete Blonde. She's at her best Vampiric style with this song.

I think she has an absolutely beautiful voice and she uses it to perfect effect. I've told Aunt Tudi more than once I'd consider selling my soul to Satan to be able to sing like Johnette Napolitano. Her alto voice seems to cut right through you with its acerbic beauty. She can sing so sweetly at one point, then blow your hair off your head with the power of her voice. She still performs out in Los Angeles and I actually got an invitation to come see her perform, but there was no way I could make it. That's one of my greatest regrets. Here are the lyrics to "Bloodletting: the Vampire Song."

There's a crack in the mirror
and a bloodstain on the bed -
There's a crack in the mirror
and a bloodstain on the bed -
O you were a vampire and baby
I'm the walking dead
O you were a vampire and baby
I'm the walking dead

(chorus)
I got the ways and means
to New Orleans I'm going
down by the river
where it's warm and green
I'm gonna have a drink, and walk around
I got a lot to think about oh yeah oh yeah

There's a rocking chair by the window
down the hall
I hear something there in the shadow
down the hall
O you were a vampire and now I am
nothing at all
O you were a vampire and now I am
nothing at all

(chorus)

They used to dance in the garden in the
middle of the night
Dancing out in the garden in the
middle of the night
O you were a vampire
and I may never see the light
O you were a vampire
and I may never see the light

(chorus)

"Daylight" by Matt & Kim

This happy song was featured in a liquor advert, which is where I started my research on what the song was and who it was by. I came up on this duo from New York City.

The song never fails to get me moving and people have often caught me butt-dancing in my car when the song comes on Son of iGor. It's just one of those songs that has that happy-slappy feel I wish I'd had when I was their age. I've come to realise, though, that it's never too late to have a happy-slappy attitude, so I move how ever I want when the song appears on the player. Here are the lyrics.

we cut the legs off of our pants
threw our shoes into the ocean
sit back and wave through the daylight
sit back and wave through the daylight

slip and slide on subway grates
these shoes are poor mans ice skates
fall through like change in the daylight
fall through like change in the daylight

i miss yellow lines in my roads
some color on monochrome
maybe i'll paint them in myself
maybe i'll paint them in myself
maybe i'll paint them in myself
maybe i'll paint them in myself
maybe i'll paint them in myself
maybe i'll paint them in myself

these sidewalks liquid then stone
building walls and an old pay phone
it rings like all through the daylight
it rings like all through the daylight

chorus
and in the daylight we can hitchhike to Maine
i hope that someday i'll see without these frames
and in the daylight i don't pick up my phone
cause in the daylight anywhere feels like home

I have five clocks in my life
and only one has the time right
i'll just unplug it for today
ill just unplug it for today

open hydrant rolled down windows
this car might make a good old boat
and float down grand street in daylight
and float down grand street in daylight
and float down grand street in daylight
and float down grand street in daylight
and float down grand street in daylight
and float down grand street in daylight

and with just half of a sunburn
new yellow lines that i earned
step back and here comes the night time
step back and here comes the night time

chorus x2
and in the daylight we can hitchhike to Maine
i hope that someday i'll see without these frames
and in the daylight i don't pick up my phone
cause in the daylight anywhere feels like home

How I missed this song for this long is inexplicable.

BABY BLUE by Dave Matthews Band
Confess, your kiss still knocks me off my legs.
The first time I saw you was like a punch right through my chest
and I will forever, 'cause you'll forever be
my one true broken heart, pieces inside of me and you'll forever, my baby be.

You will rest your head, your strength once saving.
And when you wake you will fly away,
holding tight to the legs of all your angels.
Goodbye my love, into your blue, blue eyes,
your blue, blue world, you're my baby blue.

Confess I'm not quite ready to be left.
Still, I know I gave my level best.
You give, you give, to this I can attest
You made me, you made me.
You and me forever, baby.

You will rest your head, your strength once saving.
And when you wake you will fly away,
holding tight to the legs of all your angels.
Goodbye my love, into your blue, blue eyes,
in your blue, blue world, you and me forever.

You will rest your head, your strength once saving.
And when you wake you will fly away,
holding tight to the legs of all your angels.
Goodbye my love, into your blue, blue eyes,
in your blue, blue world, you and me forever.

You know that WTF feeling when you suddenly settle upon something with which you've been familiar for years, giving it that resplendent newborn vibe that is completely inexplicable, yet is there all the same? I've done that with a Shriekback song. It's one of the bonus songs originally only available on the Cormorant Egg, but I see it's revolving about on iTunes now. That's very good, because I can't stress more vehemently how badly anyone who reads this needs to hear this song. It most certainly will be a driving force behind The Augury of Gideon, companioned with "Gin-Soaked Boy." I'm not saying why. All I'm saying is O_o. How in the hell I have missed this song for five freaking years is beyond me. Enjoy the lyrics. Now go buy the song!

(feels like a) planet by Shriekback

i tried to walk with the mudmen
but it wasn't allowed
i wept as my golden bones were ground to dust
by a screaming crowd
they took me up to the tree line
by the mysterious pines
i stayed out for 7 nights as they hunted me down
for my holy crimes

electronic eyeballs scoop me up
even as i carve my name
pound that mutton and pour me out a glass of sublime decay

theres no rest in the galaxy
no escape in the life to come --
people gasp in my atmosphere
i'm on a turning wheel and i swear
i feel like a planet
i ache with the sun
i feel like a planet
and i wander the night till this terrible year is done

i staggered out to the firebreak
i saw the orchard in flames
i dumped my ruined clothes in a plastic bag by an open drain

i blacked out under the archway
came round immediately
and everything i knew was broken
just like they'd said it would be

spinning through the darkness burns me up
something that i cant contain
understanding this don't help at all:
lacerates you just the same

--i don't care for astronomy
its too hard on the weakened brain
i'm a stricken bird in winter
i'm blind and raw with a molten core like a planet...
i ache with the sun
i feel like a planet
i contain all there is and i carry it as i run

Hopefully Stuart will like it and we'll be set for December 1. What a way to start out the month! I haven't been this excited about new music from an artist with whom I wasn't already familiar in I can't say how long. I figured I'd be mad about Mothmen, for obvious reasons, and would struggle with the rest of the EP. Not the case! The whole EP is wondrous. I had a hard time keeping my review to one page because of everything I wanted to say about the EP, and it only has three songs on it. Yeah, that good! So good, in fact, I can't stop listening to it. I told Stuart that, if my iTunes broke, I was coming for him. It's my new hobby, threatening musicians in Swindon. Good times, good times.

**EDIT** Already heard back from Stu. He's pleased with the review! So, if no changes need to be made, it'll stay the way it is and I'll release it late tomorrow night to coincide with the 12-1 release of the EP.

Have some lyrics and a video!

Free by VAST

It's time to laugh, it's time to cry
It's time to be what you need to be
It won't be long till they are gone
And we can be what we want to be
I wanna run from everything
Everything that holds me down
Nothing to win, nothing to lose

You can't tell me what to do anymore
You can't tell me what to do anymore
Now I'm free, now I'm free, now I'm free

I'm gonna run, I'm gonna win
I'm gonna do what I need to do
'Cause it's time to be what I need to be
It's time to be what I need to be

You can't tell me what to do anymore
You can't tell me what to do anymore
Now I'm free, now I'm free, now I'm free
Oh yeah

I want to hold air in my hand
Own the one thing you can't buy
Nothing to win, nothing to lose
It's time to be what I need to be
I'm gonna run from everything
Everything that holds me down
Nothing to win, nothing to lose
It's time to be what I need to be

You can't tell me what to do anymore
You can't tell me what to do anymore
You can't tell me what to do anymore
Now I'm free, now I'm free, now I'm free

Truly a celebratory song of utter liberation in every way possible and on multiple levels of meaning. "You can't tell me what to do anymore, now I'm free, now I'm free, now I'm FREE!"

Sing it, Jon.

Old and Wise by the Alan Parsons Project

As far as my eyes can see
There are shadows approaching me
And to those I left behind
I wanted you to know
You've always shared my deepest thoughts
You follow where I go

And oh, when I'm old and wise
Bitter words mean little to me
Autumn Winds will blow right through me
And someday in the mist of time
When they asked me if I knew you
I'd smile and say you were a friend of mine
And the sadness would be lifted from my eyes
Oh when I'm old and wise

As far as my eyes can see
There are shadows surrounding me
And to those I leave behind
I want you all to know
You've always shared my darkest hours
I'll miss you when I go

And oh, when I'm old and wise
Heavy words that tossed and blew me
Like Autumn winds will blow right through me
And someday in the mist of time
When they ask you if you knew me
Remember that you were a friend of mine
As the final curtain falls before my eyes
Oh when I'm old and wise

As far as my eyes can see

Whoa....

And So I Pray by Jem

Storm is brewing in the air tonight
So many pressures on my mind
Want to escape just wanna run away
But it's not an option I have to stay

And so I pray
I wish that all these things would go away
To disappear if only for a day
Know I can't go but I don't wanna stay

Can't believe the irony
The thing I wanted is killing me
All the happy smiles I miss
Didn't think it would be like this

And I pray
I wish that all these things would go away
To disappear if only for a day
Know I can't go but I don't wanna stay

Storm is brewing in the air tonight
So many pressures on my mind
Want to escape just wanna run away
But it's not an option I have to stay

And so I pray
I wish that all these things would go away
To disappear if only for a day
Know I can't go but I don't wanna stay
To be left alone if only for a day
I wish that all these things would go away (pray to you I hope it will be alright)
To be someone else if only for a day (and over soon, I feel it)
Know I can't go but I don't wanna stay (hope that you hear me)

Emmanuel

I transcribed the song myself because it can't be found anywhere on the Internet. That's a real shame because this is one of the most beautiful songs you'll ever hear, or read for that matter.

Emmanuel by Eliza Gilkyson

When first I came into this land, in the Highlands I did dwell
Where ancient wingéd masters taught the depths of wisdom’s well
Emmanuel he walked with me and secrets he did share
The order of the swollen stars, the laws of Earth and Air
The Golden Pipes of Heaven he entrusted in my care
And I sang of the mercy of Emmanuel

In time I went a-wanderin’ into the world of Man
And, though I knew the sacred songs, my separate dreams began
And, when I thought the Pipes were mine, my eyes grew blind as well
My soul from heights of Heaven fell, Emmanuel

Slumbering, sleeping, slipping through seasons of silent nights
A servant, a snake, a soldier, a storm
A poet, a mother, a child still-born, a rock, a star, a drunk in a bar
How many more times dancing the skin dance,
So many systems of violence, romance?
Sobbing the sorrow, walking the wheel, hiding the horror, fighting the feel
Pushing the Will like a rock up a hill until…until…until
I’m drawn so slowly step by step out of this darkened place
So unaccustomed to the light, so wary of its Grace
Oh how I long to hear the Pipes I held before I fell
And sing the ancient songs of love Emmanuel

From out of dream’s awakening, it seems ten thousand years
Since I beheld my true love’s face and cried these cleansing tears
The songs returning one by one out of memory’s well
Ah, can I lay them at your feet, Emmanuel?
Can I lay them at your feet, Emmanuel?

I forgot I'd mentioned Faust in The Chalice.
Cadmus turned Dunlevy’s mask around to admire it. When had he made this again? Wasn’t it in the 1970s when he decided to remake himself? Yes, yes. After Studio 54 and the Summer of Vivisection he enjoyed with that unfortunate disco Darkling, Faust.

Now I have to incorporate the making of the Mask of Dunlevy into the account of Faust. At the very end. Perhaps the mask is baptised in Faust's blood. So much horror... When I think it can't get any worse, it does.

Aaaaaand, I've connected a song to poor Faust, from the new DMB album. It's called "Lying in the Hands of God," which has so many levels of connotation, I can't even begin to comprehend them all yet but, somehow, this song fits.

Lying in the Hands of God by Dave Matthews Band

Baby I'll be your soldier. Gladly, I'll do your bidding
For just a taste of what your holding, for just a taste you could own me.

Save your sermons for someone thats afraid to love.
I'll be right here lying in the hands of God.

Here it comes, diving in into me.
Now the floor is the ceiling.
If you never flew why would you, cut the wings off a butterfly?
Fly.

Save your sermons for someone that's afraid to love.
If you knew what I feel then you couldn't be so sure.
I'll be right here lying in the hands of God.

If you feel Angels in your hand, tear drop of joy runs down your face
You will rise.

Fillin' me up, now drain me
Skin begins to grow back slowly,
faster until I'm choking.
Really should call my mother.
Mother.

Save your sermons for someone that's afraid to love.
If you knew what I feel then you couldn't be so sure.
I'll be right here lying in the hands of God.

I am in love with nothing less.
Tear drops of joy runs off my face,
I will rise for someone that's afraid to love.
If you knew what I feel, then you couldn't be so sure.
I'll be right here lying in the hands of God.

Now the floor is the ceiling.
If you never flew, why would you?
If you never flew, why would you? You.
Why would you?

I am going straight to Hell. I think I might already be there. But, if I can get this chapter written, the rest will be gravy. Tasty gravy, thanks to Barry.

I need a Faust icon, but that can't happen right now.

One of my most beloved songs.

May, 1993 - Stratford ... have been reading through the poetry of 15th century Spain, and I find myself drawn to one by the mystic writer and visionary St. John of the Cross; the untitled work is an exquisite, richly metaphoric love poem between himself and his god. It could pass as a love poem between any two at any time ... His approach seems more akin to early Islamic or Judaic works in its more direct route to communication to his god ... I have gone over three different translations of the poem, and am struck by how much a translation can alter our interpretation. Am reminded that most holy scriptures come to us in translation, resulting in a diversity of views.

Music by Loreena McKennitt
Lyrics by St. John of the Cross (San Juan de la Cruz), arr. and adapted by Loreena McKennitt
From: The mask and mirror (1994).

Loreena McKennitt - The Dark Night of the Soul

Upon a darkened night
the flame of love was burning in my breast
And by a lantern bright
I fled my house while all in quiet rest

Shrouded by the night
and by the secret stair I quickly fled
The veil concealed my eyes
while all within lay quiet as the dead

Chorus
Oh night thou was my guide
oh night more loving than the rising sun
Oh night that joined the lover
to the beloved one
transforming each of them into the other

Upon that misty night
in secrecy, beyond such mortal sight
Without a guide or light
than that which burned so deeply in my heart

That fire t'was led me on
and shone more bright than of the midday sun
To where he waited still
it was a place where no one else could come

Chorus

Within my pounding heart
which kept itself entirely for him
He fell into his sleep
beneath the cedars all my love I gave
And by the fortress walls
the wind would brush his hair against his brow
And with its smoothest hand
caressed my every sense it would allow

Chorus

I lost myself to him
and laid my face upon my lovers breast
And care and grief grew dim
as in the mornings mist became the light
There they dimmed amongst the lilies fair
There they dimmed amongst the lilies fair
There they dimmed amongst the lilies fair

The Waiting by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

Oh baby don't it feel like heaven right now
Don't it feel like somethin' from a dream
Yeah Ive never known nothing quite like this
Don't it feel like tonight might never be again
We know better than to try and pretend
Baby no one could have ever told me bout this

The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part

Well yeah I might have chased a couple of women around
All it ever got me was down
Then there were those that made me feel good
But never as good as I feel right now
Baby you're the only one thats ever known how
To make me wanna live like I wanna live now

The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more yard
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part

Don't let it kill you baby, don't let it get to you
Don't let em kill you baby, don't let em get to you
I'll be your breathin' heart, I'll be your cryin' fool
Don't let this go to far, don't let it get to you

The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more yard
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part

Knights in Shining Karma by XTC (written by Andy Partridge)
Knights in shining karma
Tend your flame
And with love for armor
They'll remain

Ever by your bed
Guarding, still sleeping
Shield your soul from this rain
Knights in shining karma will remain

Jealous winter sun...
Cold as vichyssoises
Steals your smile for fuel
They'll ignite with braziers
Of warming stars

Knights in shining karma
Wash your feet
And with spotlesss dharma come complete

Ever by your sink drying
Up tea tears
Shield your soul from this heat
Knights in shining karma come complete

Swollen summer moon
Hot as boiling air
Poach your dreams to ash
They'll bring sips from restful slumbers
Cooling keg

Jealous winter sun...

This song by Crustation was on a sampler that I had to audition in Quality Assurance at BMG back in 1995, if memory serves correctly. The band's album was never released under the BMG umbrella. I'm not sure if it was ever released at all. But this song, this "Purple," became one of my most cherished songs. It's one of those songs that sings into your cells and lingers there to comfort you and possibly lull you into a sense of security that might be displaced. It's a perfect Vampire song. Read the lyrics and judge for yourself.

Purple by Crustation

Sitting in the silent twilight
The purple half light
Of the twilight
Wrap the night around me
Blanket of black on my back
I feel safe in the darkness

Your voice is a caress
Delights my senses
Heightens my happiness
Lightens my sadness
Your eyes were on me I remember
Those days in September
Sunset run night
Your hand held in mine

Sitting in the silent twilight
The purple half light
Of the twilight
Wrap the night around me
Blanket of black on my back
I feel safe in the darkness

The silence is so loud
I almost feel it
Nothing to say now
Barely can talk now
I'm feeling like I'm lost
I'm feeling dumb
Speechless and numb
So long I've been blind
I'm losing my mind

Sitting in the silent twilight
The purple half light
Of the twilight
Wrap the night around me
Blanket of black on my back
I feel safe in the darkness

Sitting in the silent twilight rapture
Could it be too hard to capture ?
This velvet moment of serenity

Take it for what it's worth. My life is a soundtrack.

Jack's Lament by Danny Elfman

There are few who'd deny, at what I do I am the best
For my talents are renowned far and wide
When it comes to surprises in the moonlit night
I excel without ever even trying
With the slightest little effort of my ghostlike charms
I have seen grown men give out a shriek
With the wave of my hand, and a well-placed moan
I have swept the very bravest off their feet

Yet year after year, it's the same routine
And I grow so weary of the sound of screams
And I, Jack, the Pumpkin King
Have grown so tired of the same old thing

Oh, somewhere deep inside of these bones
An emptiness began to grow
There's something out there, far from my home
A longing that I've never known

I'm a master of fright, and a demon of light
And I'll scare you right out of your pants
To a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mister Unlucky
And I'm known throughout England and France

And since I am dead, I can take off my head
To recite Shakespearean quotations
No animal nor man can scream like I can
With the fury of my recitations

But who here would ever understand
That the Pumpkin King with the skeleton grin
Would tire of his crown, if they only understood
He'd give it all up if he only could

Oh, there's an empty place in my bones
That calls out for something unknown
The fame and praise come year after year
Does nothing for these empty tears

Paths of Desire by the October Project

I have traveled the paths of desire
Gathering flowers and carrying fire
Raising a grace to the reasons behind me
Looking for strength as you live to remind me
I'm drawn to you
I'm caught in you
I am the fly who dreams of the spider
The path to the web becomes deeper and wider
I dream of the silk that is tangled inside you
And know that I want to be somewhere beside you
I'm drawn to you
I'm caught in you

CHORUS
In your eyes
All of the promises
All the lies
Will you keep all of the promises
In your eyes

I am crossing the bridges of sorrow
Empty with yearning and full of tomorrow
The river is high and the bridges are burning
I know I've been hurt but I keep on returning
I'm drawn to you
I'm caught in you

CHORUS
In your eyes
All of the promises
All the lies
Will you keep all of the promises
In your eyes

I have traveled the paths of desire
Following smoke and remembering fire
The night is falling, the path is receding
I don't need to see it to know where it's leading

CHORUS
In your eyes
All of the promises
All the lies
Will you keep all of the promises
In your eyes
In your eyes
In your eyes

This song always gave me chills. It's giving me deeper chills than normal tonight. I don't know why.

Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush
Out on the wiley, windy moors
Wed roll and fall in green.
You had a temper like my jealousy:
Too hot, too greedy.
How could you leave me,
When I needed to possess you?
I hated you. I loved you, too.

Bad dreams in the night.
They told me I was going to lose the fight,
Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering
Wuthering heights.

Heathcliff, its me--cathy.
Come home. Im so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Heathcliff, its me--cathy.
Come home. Im so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Ooh, it gets dark! it gets lonely,
On the other side from you.
I pine a lot. I find the lot
Falls through without you.
Im coming back, love.
Cruel heathcliff, my one dream,
My only master.

Too long I roam in the night.
Im coming back to his side, to put it right.
Im coming home to wuthering, wuthering,
Wuthering heights,

Heathcliff, its me--cathy.
Come home. Im so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Heathcliff, its me--cathy.
Come home. Im so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Ooh! let me have it.
Let me grab your soul away.
Ooh! let me have it.
Let me grab your soul away.
You know its me--cathy!

Heathcliff, its me--cathy.
Come home. Im so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Heathcliff, its me--cathy.
Come home. Im so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Heathcliff, its me--cathy.
Come home. Im so cold!
