A Decision

It can't get much worse. Well, it can and it will without the proper care and treatment, which I can't give and I'm not getting, but that's neither here nor there at the mo. So I've decided that I'm continuing to work the DG job until I'm able able to see the rheumatologist next month. He's the best in the area, being a teaching doctor, and he takes this crap insurance that Dollar General provides for their employees. This may set me on the road to getting disability since it's obvious I can't do what I'm doing and I can't find work doing what I'd been doing. If I'm scheduled, my next day to work is Saturday. Maybe, by then, I can put some weight on my knee and go about business as usual.

Is it possible to put a stool behind the cash register? Then you could lean or sit on the stool while checking people out. That might help keep weight off of your knee.

Sure it's possible in England. In the US, you keep your arse standing. It's the only sure way the Man knows you're doing your job right, don't you know.

Actually, it's not a bad idea.

Have you at least discussed it with your boss creature?

I plan on it, but I don't expect to get too far since she had me stocking shelves the day after my car accident.

I don't think there's a thing wrong with it except for how hard it is to get it. I'm not holding out much hope, but at least I can try.

It depends on the state you're in, though, doesn't it?

I wish you the best of luck with the disability. I've wondered for awhile why you weren't on it, but I figured you had reasons. And I have a feeling that if you can get that step, you might be able to also go on other forms of assistance, being that you take care of Tudi. It's hard to get through the red tape, but you are a persistent person.

Yes, you are. Keep trying. Sounds like there's some good advice here, such as going for temporary disability first.

OH WOW

SSI (US Govt) - is a royal PIA. My David had to sue SSI to get it (only for the months in the hospital) - he was in the hospital 6 months - broken: pelvis, arm, collar bone, both hips, both legs - both below the knee & imbeded into the dash board - one leg nearly amputated. Skin grafts. Lost tooth. SSI CLAIMED he could still stand & do mechanic work while healing - applied for retraining in different career - DENIED.... Took FIVE years to get just the back pay/bills of the 6 months in the hospital. The lawyer told us it was because of his age mostly (25). I know other people with screwed up bodies - seems mental health is the way in - approved in less than 6 months. Contact a SSI lawyer & it may reduce the time. The last person I knew, she applied and approved on the first try (she's 26?) as *mentally unstable.* Hey my bills are making me *metally unstable* - potentially being on the street.......

David's applied 2 other times, denied - he just gave up (what they are hoping for) - he's applied for numerous jobs, denied due to medical issues (why we are self employed). Since then he has added two hernias, Cervical Spine compression, hypertention & still undiagnosed rectal bleeding - most likely all this due to the accident.... We can't afford being in the *insurance pool* for him - rates 2K plus a month....

My best guess for you - as said - see if you can get state unemployment due to *temporary* disability. Here - if the employer says - yes, we don't offer sick time off with pay, the accident didn't happen at work, etc. You can get some pay to hold you over... Then work with this doctor to get you toward the direction!!!

I wasn't trying to depress you, just I've been through a lot of the US Gov't stuff. There is usually also some state stuff you can apply for. The doctor's office can most likely lead you in the right direction - trust me they deal with this a LOT & possibly have a lawyer they know that is good. The lawyer's are limited to a certain percentage by SSI. 15 YEARS ago I think it was 20?%...

I know that the most of the problem is how many people have abused the system - but common sense did leave it years ago...

Damn, hon, I'm so sorry....

Do the stool thing - don't just assume they will say no. If they value you working, they can damn well make allowances. (Of course, ask/tell them first - say you want to work, but you will need the stool to continue working properly.)

Get off you arse (metaphorically speaking) and start on that disability paperwork NOW. It will be a PITA, it will require persistance, but it is a necessity, and you will be glad when you get it. It took me over 2 years of fighting to get the shoulder surgery I needed (workman's comp at my old job were a bunch of short-armed mf'ers), but I did get it, and it immediately improved my life....
