The Five Copies

Five copies of the book may not be enough. I may have to buy a couple in order to get everyone a copy of their own.
See the dilemma?
I also need to get a copy to show around town to see if local book shops would be interested in helping a local artist out. First place on my list is Malaprops in Asheville.
- Aunt Tudi
- The Mother Unit
- Barry Andrews
- Carl Marsh
- Jill Rosenburg
- Heidi Bowles-Ellis
- Heather P. Dunbar

Date: 2010-07-05 05:14 pm (UTC)First off: EVERYBODY and their mother is going to want a free copy from you. DON'T DO IT. Seriously. And I know what you're thinking: it'll be good Word of Mouth. It won't. You'll get better Word of Mouth by asking your physician if you can leave a copy in his waiting room. By all means give a free copy to Aunt Tudi and your Mom and then give out MAYBE another three copies and that's IT.
As you said, you're going to need copies to show/give to local book shops/stores and THAT'S where your priority should be.
Now here's something that's going to happen if your friends/family insist on you giving them a copy: they are also going to ask you to autograph it. If they do they YOU insist that they pay for it. If they don't want to do so, screw 'em.
I know it sounds rough but as I've said, I've been through this and I speak from experience. You're going to have people who haven't spoken to your in years calling you up practically demanding a free copy and it's up to you, baby...but I wouldn't do it. Give free copies to the ones who have supported you and been there for you through the agony of giving birth to this literary child.

Derrick's right. Keep the free copies to a minimum.
