She Died with no Boots on

[livejournal.com profile] miintikwa wanted me to write about Aunt Tudi, so I've decided to relay her courageous battle for a pair of diabetic shoes.

You see, Aunt Tudi's feet are essentially square, being almost as wide as they are long. A Chinese foot-binder would take one look at Tudi's tootsies and hang himself with a shoe lace. I'm serious. Now they're swelling a lot, which gives them a cube sort of shape. It's like living with Frankenstein's monster's older brother's second cousin.

Last year, she got a new pair of diabetic shoes, which she never wore because after about 20 times of trying to fit her last year before the swelling, the man who was doing the fitting just didn't seem to get the special needs Aunt Tudi has regarding her feet. As a result, Aunt Tudi has now been wearing the same pair of shoes for two years.

A different company is having a go with trying to fit Aunt Tudi for shoes. A gentleman came out to the house and fitted her while I babysat the dogs in the bedroom. About a week later he came with her shoes, which turned out to be too narrow. We're now waiting for the new, wider pair to come in. Hopefully, that'll be the end of it. Something tells me that it won't go as smoothly as we all hope and pray.

After the dude left the second time, Aunt Tudi bemoaned her woes to me. "Sometimes, I think I'm just gonna die and not have even one pair of shoes to my name."

Before I thought, I blurted out, "Sort of like that old Errol Flynn movie except your movie would be She Died with no Boots on!"

Well that got her tickled and now she's not so down in the dumps about it. She's keeping her chin up about the matter and sending positive energy out to the Mighties that the pair of shoes heading her way will be The Pair and she'll stop having to wear house shoes or diabetic shoes so old they have holes in them. So all you peoples out there do the same thing, eh? Let's make sure Aunt Tudi doesn't die with no boots on!

In the meantime, check out her swollen tootsies...

Poor Aunt Tudi! That's some misery, right there. TOo bad she can't wear Birks. My mom has trouble fitting her diabetic feet too. Neuropathy is a bitch. Aunt Tudi needs a nice cool pan of water to soak in.

Aye that she does, and she soaks them regularly. I would've given up ages ago, but on she trudges.

They're so swollen, they're practically wheels.

Those do not look like fun little feet, indeed.

Check out the local(ish) sports medicine place, if you have one...I had really bad lymphoma in my legs after my last round of plastics, and girrrrrrrrrrrrrrrl, they fixed me up...it's what they do...well, it's *part* of what they do. If you've already done this, please disregard this bit of unsolicited advice. ;o)

I wish I could be a shoe fairy. I would wave my magic wand and dear Aunt T. would have a pair of magic shoes that never wore out and changed to match her outfit and mood.

That would be a neat trick. I also think that would be one of the best super-powers ever. Think about it, how much grief in this world is caused by lack of proper footwear!?!

For all the swelling, Aunt T.'s toes look darn good. A dear friend of mine, only 45 years old, is now in his 5th week in a hospital because he didn't take care of his toes (he is diabetic) and the doctors had to remove 5 of his toes, 2 on one foot, 3 on the other.

Her poor feet! I was just writing a review of my shoes, and it occurred to me, Drew Shoes are for people with diabetic feet, too! Their sizing... I would have her try them on before ordering online. I know that their sizing is a little... well, let me put it this way...

My feet measure a 6.5 B. I wear AFO's, as you know, which adds an extra depth requirement. . In Skecher's, to accommodate I have to order a 6.5 Extra Wide and remove the insole to make them fit. However, with the Drew, I wear a 6.5 B. If I needed to, there are two insoles I can remove to make them roomier, but I don't need to as they are deep enough.

If I recalll, I tried on and bought my first pair at FootSmart.

Here's the Drew Shoe home page: http://www.drewshoe.com/default.aspx

Here's their store Locator: http://www.drewshoe.com/StoreLocator.aspx

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the info. I'll pass this on to Aunt Tudi.
