We're trying to figure out an alternative method of dialing 911 in the event our power goes out or the computer craps out, derailing Magic Jack.

The mother_unit is talking Aunt Tudi into getting a Jitterbug. I hate the fucking Jitterbug. I even included my hatred of Jitterbug and Jitterbug users in one of my Joker fics, that's how much I hate it. No. NONONONONONONONO! Not....Gonna....Do....It.

Couldn't you just get a pre-paid cell phone with a very small amount of minutes and make sure it's always charged and never EVER use it...just have it on hand with other lights out stuff, like candles and flashlights.

Aren't those kinda expensive? I checked into getting my parents one and I think I gave it the boot for being too pricey. We ended up getting them a pre-paid Virgin Mobile phone instead.

The website says the phones are $147 and the cheapest plan I see is $14.99. However, maybe I'm missing something. If it is actually good, I could switch my folks over b/c I think those giant old people sized number buttons might be good for them. ;)

Actually, any cell phone whether it has service or not is able to dial 911. Trust me. Parents who give kids their old cell phones to play with that still have batteries are the bane of my existence. Little snot nosed brats who know that I can't track down a 911 only cell phone and who call and say things like "you're a doo-doo head" 45 times a dy make me want to kill people.

Additionally, even if you don't have home phone service, if you have Bell South, then you should be able to hook a phone up to the outlet (provided it's NOT a cordless) and get 911 service even if the power goes out. If it's a cordless you're SOL.
