I have a great feeling about this new job. It feels like I'm back at BMG when it was still a family and not yet the Pit it became in the last 5 years. I know I keep saying this, but everyone is just so laid back and cool with each other. The previous owner of the company, who still works there as a consultant (he's partially retired I think), came up to me before lunchtime and told me not to stress about learning everything all at once. He said: "The shipping business is unlike any other business there is. When you come in off the street, you have no idea how much paperwork is involved in getting something moved from one place to another, so don't expect to learn everything any time soon. It'll take a good six months to a year before you're comfortable with it all. But don't get discouraged either. Just go at your own pace and don't be afraid to make mistakes. You're only human."
That was really nice of him.
I did a lot better today than I did yesterday. There's still a ton for me to learn and process and that's before I can even work on picking up speed, but everyone seems okay with my progress so far, so I'm not going to stress about it.
It takes me two minutes to get to work, so I don't have to leave the house until about 7:55. I can sleep in some and not stress about being late. And I beat all the 5 o'clock traffic, getting home before most people even have a chance to get to their cars.
Earlier today I got a call from Dell offering me a job as a sales rep, but I'm not taking it. It may be more money; however, it's probably a high stress job and it would definitely be further away. I'm a fool if I go anywhere else right now. A FOOL! I like the people with whom I work, I like the work, I love how close I am to work. No, I'm not going anywhere unless they boot me. But I don't think they will. Right before I left, Doug told Brian that I should be nominated at employee of the week, so I'm apparently doing well.

Date: 2006-06-07 02:13 am (UTC)You're only two minutes away? Does that mean you won't be getting a moped? Because the prospect of you not getting a moped totally bums me out.

Date: 2006-06-07 02:43 am (UTC)Oh, and by the way, my hubby vetoed Asheville as it's too far away from where he would likely be working (Charlotte) so I guess once we get down south, I'll be going to see you since you don't really like Charlotte. Which is fine, it just means I don't have to worry about cleaning for company. :-)

Date: 2006-06-07 04:46 am (UTC)1 dell is for the most part proprietary in anything they can get away with which allows them to jack up prices. theres not very much they can do this will its mostly their laptop power adapters. STill though, you get the point.
2 dell rarely contracts with anyone to repair them, we cannot send them off for service and we can rarely replace parts.
3 dell continues to use parts that are being outdated to the last possible date. so bob who buys a computer 3 years ago from dell that has pieces that went out of style 5 years ago so he has to shell out big bucks to get anything replaced because no one makes it anymore.
4 dell bought out alienware. this would be like kia buying out bmw. it shouldnt happen and its insulting to the very exsistence.
5 Dell thinks that they can offer free tech support which is wrong 90% of the time. this is very annoying when a person comes in for me to help and they've been fed a bunch of bs about how great their computer is and the problem is being caused by their neighbor's uncle's cat's telepathic powers.
6 when i was at donaldson center, i redid their network. they were getting new computers for the school (around 250ish) and new servers. I set up all the computers with my partner and aided with the servers, not to mention keeping the old computers running until the new ones were sent. They were all dells so i haven't just seen 15 or 20, i've seen about 500 or so. They are the devil incarnate and you'd have to pay me to take one. There are one or two that are alright but a two percent chance of getting something that works is way way way to low for me.
7 the fact that all of their tech support is in india, where you cannot possible throw something hard enough to smack them in the head, should tell you something. I have seen so many people frustrated by the sheer bullshit that dell does with its warranties and products in general i cringe everytime i see one because i knwo what's in store.
So anyone reading this who's had a good experience with dell i'm happy for you, but you're one of the few.

Date: 2006-06-07 08:19 am (UTC)You could always get one of those electric powered scooters - you know, the ones that look like a skateboard with an outboard motor attached. I think they can hit a whopping top speed of 8mph.
Just the thought of you on one of those makes me all laughy-tingly inside....

Date: 2006-06-07 02:18 pm (UTC)And it is good to hear about the Dells, as stated by Maradia. I am, of course a Mac enthusiast, being in Graphic arts for years earlier. But I too have been hearing about the great Dells, so I have been recommending them to people who want a non-Mac computer. No more!
