Insulin, socks, limited intelligence

Dr. Adams-Hudson has put Aunt Tudi on insulin. Because of the problems with her hands, though, Aunt Tudi has been prescribed this pen that she dials the dosage and gives herself the shot. This morning, Aunt Tudi's blood sugar was 422. Uh....no...not good. So she's on insulin, at least for now. The doc wants to see her again on Wednesday. This was Aunt Tudi prior to being seen by the doctor. She has every right to look worried.

The socks I'm wearing today are a personal favourite.

I got a note from B suggesting a refurbishment of his personal site, wanting to know if I would like to hear his suggestions. Of course I would! The only problem is my limited html abilities and my total lack of skill in any other web languages. That does it. I've got to sign up for a web-development class. It's gonna kill me to admit to him that I'm a moron, but there's nothing for it! Curses.

Date: 2005-12-05 10:14 pm (UTC)A couple of things that help maintain blood sugars are a diet high in fiber and drinking water. They aren't miracle cures. She'll still need insulin. But they'll help, probably, and she won't need as much insulin. Excercise helps a lot, too, even if she only goes for a walk around the block (or around Big Box Mart).
As long as she takes care of herself, she should be fine. Of course, this is coming from someone who isn't taking care of herself properly.:-P

Date: 2005-12-06 01:00 pm (UTC)i found that whole fiber + water thing (and of course walking)[
in fact, i made up a little saying in the early days (when getting used to eating right was hardest): if you eat your salad, you can have some cheesecake. (cheesecake being high fat, low sugar and therefore, if you must splurge, one of the better choices, NOT that high fat anything is good for us diabetics -- we're doomed to heart trouble -- but still, a person's gotta have a joy-happy break now and then).
if i eat a good salad (i'm picky: mostly i like lettuce w/tomato and nothing else) before a meal, i CAN cheat a little and have a cookie or a serving of pudding without sending my BG skyward. even better if i take a walk after!
walking helps because of those BIG MUSCLES (thighs/hips) moving -- so necessary for the insulin to be processed!! besides which, everybody can walk, even us whales! there's no rule that says you gotta walk FAST or SMOOTHLY at first...grace (for me) only comes with practice.

Date: 2005-12-06 09:52 pm (UTC)Scary stuff, diabetes, lots in my family, and I'm very sorry to hear about the escalation. But I'm sure Tudi will be fine if she does what she's told!
